Apply for 2012 USDA REAP grant now

What is it?
The Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) provides assistance to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to complete a variety of projects.

Offering both loan guarantees and grants, the REAP program helps eligible applicants install renewable energy systems, make energy efficiency improvements and conduct energy audits and feasibility studies.

How much are the grants?
The grants can be up to 25% eligible project costs and are limited to $500,000 for renewable energy systems and $250,000 for energy efficiency improvements.

Grant requests as low as $2,500 for renewable energy systems and $1,500 for energy efficiency improvements will be considered. At least 20% of the grant funds awarded must be for grants of $20,000 or less.

Who is eligible?
REAP applies to Rural Small Businesses (including farmers with less than 50% of income from the farm) and Ag. Producers (over 50% income from the farm). The program is not open to residential applicants, however in some states there are ways for clients to set up small businesses to apply.

Deadlines
With the 1603 Treasury grant expiring at the end of the year, clients interested in applying for REAP before they start their RE/EE project (yet in 2011) should get started now to qualify for that 30% as a grant rather than a tax credit.
